Event Description:
Tuesday November 3rd 2009 6-00pm
Newcastle University Culture Lab
Discussion & refreshments
Everyone welcome
In the early work of the Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies, researchers,
influenced by the work of Richard Hoggart, Raymond Williams and Stuart Hall,
formed productive links with communities which not only resulted in innovative research,
but led in addition to a re-shaping of the academic field now known as cultural studies.
Ethnographic collaborations, which brought researchers and communities together,
meant that in the study of youth culture, subculture, race, gender and ethnicity new work
emerged on the basis of dialogues between researchers and communities.
The northern network of cultural studies continues this tradition focusing on the north
of England.
The ‘north’ however defined reflects a specific past which through its cultural transitions
and transformations shapes the present. Some traces of the past are shared with other
areas of the UK and wider post-industrial global regions. The links between the recent
past and present, especially in the way they are both concerned with representation and
identity, form the background to the network’s research interests.
The northern network of cultural studies seeks to document and represent these
transformations through engaged research that brings together established and new
communities. It will in the process engage with wider cultural configurations and contexts
and in so doing contribute to the shaping of cultural studies for the next decade and beyond.
Organisers: Hilary Fawcett ● Tony Purvis ● Chris Wharton ● Rosie White
